Torakusu Yamaha was born in 1851. He trained as a watchmaker. But, later changed his attention towards musical instruments. He died in 1916 passing the business on to capable hands.
After WWII Yamaha president Genichi Kawakami recognized Japan needed affordable transportation more than pianos. In 1955 motorcycle division was started. Yamaha produced its first bike. The YA-1 a 125cc, single-cylinder, 2 stroke streetbike. Holding true to its musical background, the company continued to use its very recognizable logo depicting three interlocking tuning forks.
Yamaha brought its first bikes to the USA in 1958. The model lineup consisted of the YD-1 and MF-1 streetbikes.
Yamaha's championship racing history goes all the way back to 1964 when Phil Read won the 250cc World Championship. Yamaha has had many great champions since then including Kenny Roberts, Giacomo Agostini, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Thomas Stevens, Doug Henry, Valentino Rossi, Ben Spies, and Jorge Lorenzo to name a few.
