Antonio Cavalieri Ducati began making radio components out of Bologna, Italy with his three sons in 1926. By 1935 they had become successful enough to enable construction of a new factor in the Borgo Panigale area of the city. Production was maintained during WWII, despite many bombings. In 1950 Ducati started offering their first motorcycle, a 48cc bike capable of 40 mph and 200 mpg.
Ducati has made motorcycles for many categories, but is best know for high performance sportbikes characterized by large displacement L-twin engines with a desmodromic valve design. This design incorporates a dedicated cam lobe and lifter which allows for quicker valve movement than conventional methods. Ducati extensively uses a trellis steel frame configuration and dry clutches. Arguably the most recognizable traits for these beautiful Italian works of motorcycle art.
Success in racing came as early as 1951 for Ducati and stayed competitive through the years. However in the 1990's that success sky rocketed with Suberbike World Championships (WSBK) for many Ducati riders including Raymond Roche, Doug Polen, Carl Fogarty, Troy Corser, Troy Bayliss, Neil Hodgson, James Toseland, and Carlos Checa. Since 1991 Ducati has won 16 SBK Manufacturer World Championships. Making it one of the most successful manufacturers in production based motorcycle racing.
Long a fan of Ducati, Competition Werkes began making aftermarket fender parts for many Ducati models in the mid-1990's. Competition Werkes has many bikes in it's stables.
