Bavarian Motor Works, commonly know as BMW, is a German manufacturing company founded in 1916. BMW started as an aircraft company. Due to a war treaty following WWI BMW was forced to cease aircraft production. The company consequently shifted to motorcycle production in 1923.

BMW produces motorcycles through it's BMW Motorrad division. All BMW motorcycles are manufactured in Berlin, Germany, with some components coming from Austria, Taiwan, and China. BMW motorcycles are known for their smooth nature and technological advancements.

Since 2009 BMW Motorrad has had motorcycles competing in the Superbike World Championship (WSBK). This is the premier world championship for production based motorcycles.
